在地的异域 vol.2

on site exotic vol.2

The proposal was one of the transformation plans for three semi-abandoned Expo venues in 2022. The design premise was to transform these temporary buildings originally used as exhibition installations into permanent hotel rooms, while retaining the original structure and regional theme of each venue. The difficulty (and interesting part) of the project lies in finding non-symbolic expression possibilities for distant cultures in China.
The existing Caribbean Community (CARICOM) pavilion in the Expo site is far from the culture of the Caribbean region in terms of form, plan or materials. As a limited political organization, CARICOM's member states share a highly common culture and history. The design starts from the research on it. The reshaping of the site landscape and the interior scheme both originate from the understanding of the local architectural system. The original site had too much hard paving and too much open ground in front of the building, which made the building lack the privacy needed for a homestay. The landscape design lacked the visual elements of the Caribbean region and the experience was too monotonous.

The site strategy first significantly reduces the area of hard paving to restore the site to its natural state. Then, by taking advantage of the undulating terrain, "rain gardens" are formed. Through the replanting of vegetation, two important open lawn spaces are enclosed within the site: the "activity area" for outdoor activities of hotel guests and the "Four Seasons Garden" providing exclusive views for guest rooms.
A single path organizes a charming spatial experience: after entering the base, guests must first pass through a shady area to reach the open "activity zone", then enter the long building corridor, and only when they open the door can they fully enjoy the view of the "Four Seasons Garden". The entire landscape echoes the typical garden scenery of the Caribbean region in terms of the height combination of plants and spatial enclosure

The original steel structure of the building was clear and simple, and the form of its pitched roof also coincided with the traditional architecture of the Caribbean region. Therefore, we decided to utilize this ready-made structure to form the key elements of the new architectural language: namely, the prominent slender vertical building compo

nents in the architecture of the Caribbean region. The first step of the renovation is to raise the indoor floor and lift it off the ground, allowing animals and plants to pass beneath, and paying tribute to the raised floors commonly found in buildings in the Caribbean region. A series of walls are staggered and inserted between the roof trusses and the raised ground, defining the boundaries of the guest rooms and creating an "eave corridor" with excellent privacy conditions for each guest room beneath the roof trusses. Just like the architecture in the Caribbean region, let the scenery blur the sensory boundaries inside.

Between the room and the roof truss, a "mezzanine" is formed for placing outdoor air conditioners and other equipment. This mezzanine not only keeps the height of the guest room within a comfortable range, but also formally separates the "roof truss" from the "room", paying tribute to the typical formal opposition in Anglo Carribean Architecture: the slender architectural components in the sunlight and the solid walls in the shade. The entrance of the building consists of a humble reception foyer and a semi-outdoor porch. The white steel structure, the green wooden facade and the red terracotta floor tiles form a visual tension. The corridor facade is composed of several sliding doors. In pleasant seasons, it can be pushed open to make the building a seating place for enjoying the garden view. It also avoids the reliance of public areas on HVAC equipment. Each guest room offers an undisturbed and exclusive view. The semi-outdoor platform located beneath the high roof truss extends the interior towards the garden.
